The Honourable David M. Brown - Detailed Biography

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a roster member of Arbitration Place in Toronto, I am available to conduct arbitrations and mediations in commercial, energy sector, and estates disputes. With a small farm in Eastern Ontario, I am also available to handle arbitrations and mediations through Arbitration Place’s Ottawa facilities, including disputes that arise in the agri-business sector.
I served as a judge on the Ontario courts for over 18 years (2006-2024): on the Court of Appeal for Ontario for a decade (2014-2024); previous to which I sat on the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, where I acted as lead judge on the Toronto Region Estates List for two years and sat for several years on the Toronto Region Commercial List. In 2014, I served as President of the Ontario Superior Court Judges’ Association.
Prior to my appointment to the Bench, I was a partner in the Toronto Office of Stikeman Elliott LLP, practising in the firm’s Energy and Civil Litigation Groups. While in practice, I authored the text, Energy Regulation in Ontario.
I write and speak frequently on the efficient management of litigious disputes and civil justice reform. I have taught both appellate and trial advocacy.
I obtained my J.D. from the University of Toronto Law School (1981) and LLM in Constitutional Law from Osgoode Hall Law School (2005). Prior to attending law school, I spent two years studying in the People’s Republic of China, earning certificates from the Beijing Languages Institute (1977) and Nanjing University (1978).
